Explaining EJO's omission

EJO's not one of my favourites though I love Hamlet Club and Roundheads. The early Abbey books are good but most of the later ones are dire. She's generally regarded as one of the big three in girls' school stories along with EBD and DFB (also missing from my list) but I don't think she is primarily a writer of school stories. Too many births, deaths and marriages.

Tell me more- who is DFB? I got the other one but am stumped! I used to love the Chalet School stories and I must admit, the Abbey Girls. Although not school stories, have you read Gene Stratton Porter? One of my all time favourites...Girl of the Limberlost. Try it if you can.

Yes, I can see your argument. They are not school stories (the later ones anyway) but still addictive reading with a very dedicated readership. I would be interested in any theories you might have to explain her passionate following. I’m not sure why I liked them so much that I have collected virtually the whole series.
My very modern Y gen daughter starting reading them when she was about 9 or so and 10 years later still loves them. Again, why? They don’t stand up to comparison with someone like Noel Streatfeild.
I can why you left Elinor Brent- Dyer off, but why Dorita Fairlie Bruce?
